Jay Erick Magnuson, 68, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, September 22, 2022 at his home in Austin. Jay was born on April 28, 1954 to Erick and Evelyn Magnuson at Albert Lea Hospital. Jay grew up on the family farm in Hartland, Minnesota. He had many happy memories of playing outside with his siblings.
Jay attended elementary school in Hartland, then went to school in New Richland from grades 7 through 12, where he graduated. After graduating he worked many jobs including with a farmer, as a carpenter, at Albert Lea’s paint shop for many years, then graduated as a draftsman and worked at Wilsons Foods in as a designer. Jay went back to school for computers and worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester in the computer department, installing and troubleshooting computers. He walked all over the big Mayo campus. Jay worked at Mayo until he took early retirement when he was diagnosed with cancer.
In his younger years, Jay was in the theater in Albert Lea, acting and backstage doing the sets. Jay has also sung in a barbershop quartet as well as St. Olaf’s Lutheran Church Choir. He had many hobbies which included construction, renovation, gardening, playing many musical instruments, such as the piano (which he never took lessons, just played by ear), guitar, banjo and harmonica. He also enjoyed playing cards, board games and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Jay was married to Carol Antonison and later divorced. He then married Terri Owens on September 12, 2009 at Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Jay said he was blessed not only to be married to Terri, but also to have 3 bonus sons, Ben, Eli and Caleb Owens. Jay was so happy to be their stepfather, as he had always wanted to start a family. The couple lived in the countryside and moved to town when their health deteriorated. Jay and Terri attended Faith Evangelical Free Church in Austin.
Survivors include his wife, Terri Magnuson; his bonus sons, Ben, Eli and Caleb Owens; two brothers, Joel (Joyce) Magnuson of Delta, Colorado and Jon (Cheryl) Magnuson of Irving, California; brother-in-law, Gerry Koland; nephews, John (Christine) Magnuson, Brad (Lisa) Koland and Scott (Heidi) Koland. Jay was predeceased by his parents, Erick and Evelyn Magnuson; his sister, Jane Koland and younger sister, Arlene; and his nephew, Brian Koland.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 2022 at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Austin. Visits will take place one hour before the service. Condolences can be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
