Anyone wishing to learn piano, whether they are children or adults wishing to develop their skill, will now have the opportunity to access the recently opened Ardmore Piano School. Classes will be taught by instructor Minwoo Park who received his Masters in Piano Performance from Western Michigan University and is currently working on his PhD at the University of Alabama. He will also offer classes in his native Korean language.
Park said he started learning the piano at the age of five thanks to encouragement from his mother.
“In South Korea, parents are very passionate about raising children,” Park said. “When I was young, the piano was a big trend. Even though my family was not rich and could not afford private lessons, my mother was able to push me to take group lessons.
Park said he was never the most talented student in his piano lessons, but he continued and didn’t give up – something he emphasizes to his own students.
“I wasn’t the most talented person, but I just kept playing,” Park said. “I saw some really good piano students in elementary school, middle school, and high school, but everyone quit. I just kept going, and now I’m almost my PhD. That’s what I always say to my students – same second language. Just keep going. “
Park arrived in the United States in 2012 and studied English at the University of Oklahoma. From there he studied piano in Michigan and later in Alabama. While at OU, he also met his wife Laila whose family lives in Ardmore. It was this connection that brought him here to open his studio.
Park currently offers one-to-one lessons, but plans to offer group lessons in the near future once the pianos it runs out of stock – pianos are another item currently experiencing supply chain issues in the near future. due to the pandemic and subsequent closures – have arrived. Group lessons will be cheaper and give students an idea of whether or not they want to continue with the lessons.
It will also offer Korean language courses. He has been teaching Korean online for several years, but decided to offer classes in person after some people expressed interest. He currently has two students in the Ardmore area.
“I wasn’t sure if there would be any benefit in taking (Korean) classes at Ardmore, but I saw a few,” Park said. “I think for a long time people were more interested in learning Chinese or Japanese. But nowadays, with K-pop groups like BTS and Korean dramas becoming more popular, people want it. know more about the culture. So I’m happy to teach Korean to help the Ardmore community, and it’s also a good way to promote my home country. “
He said his ultimate goal was to expand his studio to include more space for individual and group lessons, as well as bringing in other instructors to teach instruments other than the piano.
